Belinda Jackson and April Hayes were in chambers during last Wednesday’s (June 4) Sunbury Village Council meeting to receive a mayoral proclamation from Sunbury Mayor Tommy Hatfield declaring last week Relay For Life Week in the Village.
Relay For Life is a 24-hour event that brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking or running on a track.
Relay For Life of Big Walnut was held last Saturday and Sunday at the Big Walnut High School Stadium. Over 100 participants on 18 teams joined forces during the 18-hour overnight event with a goal of raising $47,000.
All money raised during Relay For Life events go to the American Cancer Society, the leading nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
Jackson said area residents could continue to contribute to the 2014 Relay For Life of Big Walnut total via their favorite Relay teams until the Relay season ends in August.
