The Council for Older Adults is invited all aboard at its September fundraiser.
COA will host the annual campaign kick-off event Sept. 4, this year deemed Rock the Boat. The Caribbean cruise-themed event will replace last year’s Scarlet and Gray Shindig to support the levy campaign. This year’s goal is to raise $10,000 of funding to directly support COA programs.
“(Since the levy passed) that has kind of shifted our focus to direct support of COA,” said event coordinator Mike Miller. “We chose the cruise theme for this event because everybody who thinks of a cruise thinks of a good time.”
Miller said the 6,000 square-foot space inside the COA’s facility, 800 Cheshire Road in Delaware, will be transformed into the deck of the COA cruise ship.
From 6 to 10 p.m., the COA cruise will come alive with various performers, including a steel drum player, a casino royale, drinks, food from local eateries and a cash bar. It tops off with a raffle for a Caribbean cruise for two that departs from Ft. Lauderdale Dec. 7 and travels through the tropical waters with stops at Half Moon Cay, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Key West until Dec. 14.
“It’s an event with a lot going on at once,” Miller said. “It has a lot of energy.”
The event is open to the public age 21 and older.
“Sometimes people think events here are just for older adults,” he said. “That’s not the case with this event.”
