Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood; more than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day. A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S., and the average red blood cell transfusion takes approximately three pints of whole blood.

Because of the constant need for blood, and the summer months ahead when blood supplies are in greater demand, members of Sunbury United Methodist Church will hold an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 6.

The top ten reasons for donating blood are:

  1. Donating blood saves lives.
  2. It’s a good way to give back to your community.
  3. The act of giving is selfless.
  4. You receive a free mini-physical.
  5. Every two seconds someone needs blood.
  6. The blood supply needs constant replenishment.
  7. One pint can help up to three people.
  8. Most people are eligible to donate blood.
  9. There is no substitute for human blood.
  10. You will have someone’s undying gratitude.

To schedule an appointment to donate blood during the June 13 ARC/SUMC Blood Drive go to < redcrossblood.org/centralohio > and type Sunbury’s ZIP Code – 43074 – in the Find a Blood Drive box. Scroll down to the SUMC Blood Drive and click Schedule an appointment.

As always, walk-ins are welcome, through the wait time might be a bit longer without an appointment.

Sunbury United Methodist Church has scheduled additional blood drives through the remainder of 2014.

Friday, August 15, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sunday, September 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Friday, October 17, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Friday, December 19, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sunbury United Methodist Church is located at 100 West Cherry Street in Sunbury.
