Big Walnut split a non-conference doubleheader with West Jefferson and host Jonathan Alder Saturday in Plain City. The Golden Eagles defeated the Lady Roughriders 10-3, but came up short in a 3-1 loss to the host Lady Pioneers.
Thanks to a pair of 4-run explosions in the first and second innings, Big Walnut (1-2) jumped out to an 7-0 lead in its non-conference victory over West Jefferson.
Senior Sara Petty, 2-for-4 with 2 runs batted in, and classmate Shelbie Borchers, who collected 2 hits in 4 trips, swung the big bats for the Golden Eagles with 2 hits apiece in an 11-hit BW attack. Senior Hayley Apple chipped in with a single, a walk and 3 RBI. Senior Katelynn Cheadle was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Senior Brooke Hatfield reached base twice for Big Walnut with a single and a walk, driving in a run, while freshman Jessica Coletta added a single and a base on balls. Sophomore Britni Hayes collected the Golden Eagles’ lone extra-base hit with a double. Senior Shaye Kuhlman drew 2 walks in four trips to the plate.
Sophomore Kate Petty made the start and went the distance for Big Walnut, allowing 3 runs, 1 earned, on 5 hits and 7 bases on balls. She struck out 6.The Golden Eagles made three errors in the field behind Petty.
Against Jonathan Alder, the Golden Eagles, who managed only 5 singles, fell behind 3-0 after 5 innings and could never muster a rally against the Pioneers. Big Walnut’s lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Cheadle led the Golden Eagles at the plate, collecting 2 singles in three trips. Senior Leah Shaw, Kuhlman and Borchers accounted for BW’s hits. Kuhlman drew BW’s lone base on balls.
Petty also went the distance against Alder, allowing 3 runs, one earned on 5 hits, 4 singles and a triple. She walked 3 and fanned 7. The Golden Eagles committed 4 errors behind Petty.
