Coach Ryan Balaz’ Big Walnut boys tennis squad served up back-to-back-to-back victories for the first time this season, defeating Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division rival Mount Vernon 4-1 on Tuesday, April 22 on the Yellow Jackets home court, shutting out non-league foe Marysville 5-0 on Wednesday, April 23 in Sunbury; and blanking OCC Capital member 5-0 on Thursday, April 24, in a home match.
In the Mount Vernon match, senior Logan Adams, freshman Stephen Pushkin and senior Grant Burks swept the singles courts. Adams, prevailing 6-0, 6-2 at first singles, and Pushkin, posting a 6-0, 6-4 decision at second singles, set the stage for Burks’ 3-set 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 verdict at third singles.
The Golden Eagle duo of freshmen Jared Deel and Nick Schulz gave Big Walnut a split at doubles, scoring a competitive 3-set 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 1. Seniors Jesse Rines and Scott Bailey dropped a contested 3-6, 6-4, 4-6 match at No. 2.
Big Walnut swept the Monarchs in non-conference play as Adams, Pushkin and Burks continued their solid play at singles. Adams scored 6-2 7-6 win at No. 1, Pushkin posted 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 2 and Burks prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.
The Golden Eagles’ doubles tandems of Deel-Schulz and Bailey-Rines netted a pair of tightly-contested matches with respective 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victories.
Big Walnut dominated the Falcons as Burks, scoring a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 1, and junior Isaiah Kolb, with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 2, prevailed at singles. Senior Cole Davis won by default at third singles.
On the doubles courts, the No. 2 combo of sophomore Grant Bartlett and freshman DJ Werner joined Rines and Bailey at No. 1 with 6-0, 6-0 verdicts.
