Bret Myers, a 2010 graduate of Big Walnut High School, tied for second in the men’s pole vault with a personal-best effort of 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches for Grand Valley State University on Saturday, May 24, at the 2014 NCAA Division II Men’s Track & Field Championships hosted by the Lakers in Allendale, Michigan.

Myers placed second behind meet champion Jeff Piepenbrink of Pittsburg State University, matching Piepenbrink’s winning height with a vault of 17-4 1/2, but he was relegated to second based on number of misses.

Grand Valley State placed third in the national meet with 30.50 points. St. Augustine won the DII men’s championship with 112 points. Ashland University was third with 53 points.

Bret, a 4-year letter winner in track at Big Walnut, was a two-time Central District and Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division champion in the pole vault in both 2009 and 2010 for the Golden Eagles. He is son of Eric Myers, head boys basketball and track coach at Big Walnut.
