Big Walnut’s girls varsity lacrosse team was recognized in its first-ever postseason awards banquet held May 27 at Big Walnut High School.
One senior, Janie Serna, and three juniors, Alexis Adams, Alexandra Aughenbaugh and Kelsey Bowling, were recognized by coaches Steve Palmer and James Ruark with special awards for their performances during the Golden Eagles inaugural 2014 varsity campaign.
Serna was presented with the coveted Golden Eagle Award, and award which recognizes both academic and athletic achievements for a senior with a 3.0 Grade Point Average and is based on 40 percent character, 30 percent scholarship and 30 percent athletic ability. Bowling was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Player Award; Adams the Best Offensive Player Award; and Aughenbaugh with the Best Defensive Player Award.
The Golden Eagles, who competed in the Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division, posted a 4-7 overall record in their first varsity season.
All 14 members of the Golden Eagle squad earned their first varsity letter in lacrosse, led by Serna, the lone senior on the roster. Juniors lettering included Morgan Clark, Adams, Aughenbaugh and Bowling. Sophomores lettering were Lauren Jett, Coriel Kibler, Macy Nunn, Cheyenne Salazar, Sabrina Sawan, Madelyn Wecker and Cassidy Willison. Two freshmen Emily Hall and Rylee Hall also lettered for the Golden Eagles.
Two members of the Big Walnut squad earned All-Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division honors with Adams and Bowling earning All-OCC Second Team and Aughenbaugh Honorable Mention recognition. Serna was also recognized as an OCC Scholar Athlete (Senior, 3.50 Grade Point Average).
Big Walnut Scholar Athlete (Varsity Letter, 3.20 Grade Point Average) recognition went to Aughenbaugh, Bowling, Clark, Emily Hall, Rylee Hall, Kibler, Sawan, Serna and Wecker.
