Big Walnut junior pitcher Austin Becker struck out nine over five innings of no-hit ball to lead the Golden Eagles to a convincing 7-1 win over Newark in the second round of the Division I Central District baseball tournament Wednesday in Sunbury. Becker also drove in a pair of runs in the win.


Austin Becker struck out nine over five innings of no-hit ball to lead the Golden Eagles to a convincing 7-1 win over 39th-seeded Newark in the second round of the Division I Central District baseball tournament Wednesday (May 10) in Sunbury.

Big Walnut broke the scoring seal with a two run first inning before adding a run in the third and four in the fifth.

Newark, which finished with just two hits, scored a run in the seventh to smooth out the scoring summary.

Noah Sprowls and Colton Lee combined for four of the Eagles’ six hits. Sprowls finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Lee was 2-for-3 with a walk. Becker also drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Next up, eighth-seeded Big Walnut will take on 23rd-seeded Westerville North in a district semifinal Tuesday, May 16, at Dublin Coffman High School.

Big Walnut 6, Groveport-Madison 5

The Golden Eagles wrapped up the regular season with a win, holding off the host Cruisers Tuesday (May 9) in Groveport.

Big Walnut scored five times in the first before adding what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth.

Groveport, meanwhile, scored one run in the fifth before making things interesting with four more in the home half of the seventh.

Henry von Hollen and Parker Imertreijs led the attack with two hits and two RBI apiece. Austin Becker also had a pair of hits in the win.

Colton Lee picked up the win on the mound, allowing just a run on two hits while striking out three and walking two in six innings of work.

BOYS LACROSSE

Big Walnut 14, Wellington 4 (May 9)

Big Walnut Boys lacrosse went on the road and beat Wellington 14-4 to improve to 8-6 on the season.

Goals/ Assists: Campbell Allen: 4/4; Judah Lozano: 4/3; Connor Walzak: 3/0; Seth Daniels: 1/1; Nathan Montgomery: 1/1; Sam Elliott: 1/0. Josh Hageman recorded 10 saves. Bryan Mengel had 3 saves.

Buckeye Valley 14, Big Walnut 4 (May 12)

The Boys Varsity lacrosse team completed its regular season with a loss at Buckeye Valley 14-4. The regular season ended with an above .500 record of 8-7 (1-6 OCC).

Goals/Assists: Campbell Allen 1/2; Judah Lozano 1/1; Seth Daniels 1/0; Nathan Montgomery 1/0; Joe Blubaugh 0/1; Josh Hageman: 17 saves; Bryan Mengel: 3 saves.

We head to Dayton Tuesday (May 16) to play Oakwood in the first round of the Regionals.
